What sets Winding apart from traditional dumbbells is its ability to regulate tension. By rotating the dumbbell, users can increase the deformation of the internal spring, thereby increasing the tension of the dumbbell retraction. The rope inside the dumbbell is printed with colored lines, which serve as visual cues during exercise, reminding users of the accuracy of their actions.
Constructed with a steel outer skin, Winding guarantees durability and stability during workouts. The inelastic linen rope maximizes the use of tension from the winding mechanism, ensuring a challenging and effective workout.
With dimensions of 170mm width, 40mm depth, and 170mm height, Winding is compact and easy to handle, making it suitable for home or gym use.
When using Winding, users can simply draw out the traction rope, insert the buckle into the hole, and step on the rope for training. This allows for easy adjustment of the required tension. The colored lines on the rope act as a visual guide, indicating the completion of each action. Additionally, Winding features a breathing light that users can adjust their breathing to, maximizing the effectiveness of each movement.
The Winding project began in July 2018 in Beijing and was completed in December 2018. The design team, consisting of Leiyu Chen, Yunsong Liu, Qianhan Liu, Fan Yang, and Xingjian Chen, conducted extensive research on exercise patterns and resistance methods. Their goal was to create a fitness instrument that provided a slow and uniform exertion, while allowing users to vary the resistance for different fitness effects. The frequency of the breathing lamp was determined through research on fitness breathing, helping users optimize their breathing during workouts.
Overcoming challenges such as finding innovative ways to change resistance and devising a system to remind users of proper action criteria, the designers successfully created Winding. This unique dumbbell not only provides a comprehensive workout experience but also serves as a visual indicator of the completion degree of each action.
Recognized for its ingenuity and contribution to quality of life improvements, Winding was awarded the Bronze A' Design Award in the Sporting Goods, Fitness, and Recreation Equipment Design category in 2019. This prestigious accolade celebrates designs that incorporate best practices in art, science, design, and technology, making the world a better place.
